The Garden of “Fall Afterlight” at Jiading is an authentic Ming-dynasty style traditional garden in Shanghai. It is composed by the cute Shen garden, the forest Jin garden, and the precious Gong garden which achieves similar quality as those best gardens in Suzhou and Yangzhou.
The site is next to the west of the garden, while being confronted by the city from the other three sides.A clear wall is placed at the west boundary to keep the site away from the crowd and noise from the city so that we can organize a group of internal courtyards with different scale.
These courtyards contain gallery, restaurant, bookstore, multi-purpose lounge, boutique hotel, garden, pool and so on, while the spaces between the courtyards become circulation and place for social events. Here the potential dynamics of the courtyard space is further released to accompany the spirit of traditional garden, with a free and relaxed organization.
The east boundary between the site and the garden is achieved by a series of waterfront space. It generates 3 attitudes to the existing garden: “fuse” at north, “penetrate” in the middle and “distant” at south, by these three sections of “borrowing view” have we presented our respect to the Garden of Fall Afterlight”.
