On July 8, 2026, Architecture’s Inscriptions, a major scholarly exhibition co-curated by Professor K. Michael Hays of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD) and Dr. Sun Shining (Sun Shi Ning), officially opened at TANK Shanghai. Zhu Xiaofeng, Principal Architect of Scenic Architecture Office, was invited to participate in the exhibition, presenting alongside works by 14 fellow Chinese architects and 8 contemporary artists.
With "inscription" as its core conceptual premise, the exhibition unfolds across four theoretical frameworks—Allography, Unary Trait, Parataxis, and Earth Marks. Breaking away from the dominant Western theoretical pathways rooted in "origins" and "semiotic representation," the exhibition situates contemporary architectural practice within China’s profound and longstanding inscriptive traditions, encompassing calligraphy, ink rubbings, and scroll paintings. In doing so, it reconstructs architecture’s "synthetic poetics" around materiality, traces, memory, and emergence.
At the eponymous academic symposium held at the West Bund Museum on July 9, Zhu Xiaofeng joined panelists Ding Yi, Liu Yichun, Zhan Wang, and other distinguished guests for an in-depth dialogue centered on the theme "Technics | Poetics" (技艺与诗意). Drawing upon their extensive creative practices, the speakers engaged in a nuanced discussion on the symbiotic relationship between construction tectonics, material substance, and spatial poetics, exploring how contemporary architecture actively responds to site and cultural memory through material operations.
With exhibition design led by Yung Ho Chang (Atelier FCJZ), Architecture’s Inscriptions is open to the public from July 9 through October 7, 2026.
