Scenic Architecture was invited to attend the 2011 Chengdu Biennale and participate the urban strategy exhibition for Chengdu East Village Newtown. Scenic Architecture raised here a critique on both quantity and quality of public space of high-rise residential district, a typical problematic issue in many “New Town” developments in contemporary China. A survey was then conducted on dynamic community life in multi-story residential districts built in 50’s-80’s, to regain energy and nutrient for our ambition to propose a new housing prototype: “Raised Multi-story Apartment”. We transplant advantages of public spaces from those multi-story cases to high-rise, and created a prototype structure that owns comparatively super-high PSR(public space ratio) while retaining high FAR. We expect that this prototype can provide abundant public spaces in the sky for every urban residence at his or her door, with reachable convenience, human scale, and diversified uses, and become an architectural response to the public life of high-density dwelling in the future.
